Eider

An eider is a sea duck. An eider lives in the North. The eider females are not very beautiful, being brownish-gray, while the eider male is a real dandy in spring. An eider male can be recognized by a black hat on the head, black flanks and tail, an orange-pink breast and green spots on the nape. The eider's belly is black and the breast is white.

The eider sleeps and eats on water. The eider swims and dives very well.

The eiders nest on land. Their nest is a small hole with lining of leaves and grass. The nest is hidden below stones or bushes. To prevent freezing of the eggs when the eider female flies away to eat, she plucks fluff from its belly and puts it into the nest. The eider fluff is the warmest and lightest.
