Fox
Foxes are cunning and clever animals that live almost everywhere: in forests, steppes, mountains and even in city parks! They are small and weigh a little more than a large cat. They have orange or red-brown fur, small paws and a long fluffy tail. They also have very large ears that help them hear very well!
What foxes eat
The fox is a real foodie! She eats almost anything she comes across, from bunnies, birds, bugs and worms to fruit and berries. She can even eat apples and blueberries! But most of all, foxes love small rodents, such as mice. Foxes hunt alone, unlike wolves who gather in groups. They hunt mostly at night and are able to sneak up on their prey very quietly.
Foxes are very interesting to hunt in winter! If a fox hears the squeak of a mouse, it immediately turns that way and begins to creep cautiously. Then the fox stops, listening, then makes a couple of jumps and suddenly, like an acrobat, takes off and dives into the snow to grab its prey. It's really quite fascinating to watch!
Fox family
Foxes live in burrows that they dig themselves or find ready-made ones. Foxes are very loving parents. They usually have 1 to 6 babies in the spring and both parents take care of them. If something happens to the daddy fox, another male may come to help mum take care of the cubs.
When the cubs are two weeks old, they are already opening their eyes! At four weeks old, they start learning how to become real foxes. They learn to eat regular food and hunt. Mum and dad help them with this. After just a few months, the foxes can live on their own.
Foxes and people
Foxes are very agile and intelligent. They can adapt to living near people and sometimes come to cities to look for food. But we must remember that foxes are wild animals and we need to treat them with respect and give them space to live.
