Kiang

Let's talk about a wonderful animal called a kiang.

What kind of animal is this

The kiang is a very beautiful and unique horse that lives in the high mountains. It is the largest species of wild donkey in the world! Have you ever seen a wild donkey before? Kiang's are bigger and taller than normal donkeys, but slightly smaller than horses.

What they look like

The Kiang is the largest wild donkey in the world. It weighs as much as 5 large dogs and is almost as tall as a horse. The kiang has long ears, but not as long as a normal donkey. He has a short mane like a horse and a long tail with a fluffy tip. These donkeys have very beautiful fur: brown or reddish on the back and light, almost white on the belly.

Where they live

Kiangs live in the high mountains of Asia, in a country called Tibet. There they run through the mountains, graze in the open spaces and drink water from mountain streams. They love to be outdoors and can climb very high mountains, higher than many other animals.

What they eat

Kiangs are herbivores, which means they eat grass, leaves, and other plants. They like to graze in fields and eat fresh green grass.

How they behave

Kiangs are usually friendly and curious. They can be very fast if they need to get away from danger, while having very good eyesight to observe what is going on around them. Kiang girls usually live in groups and this helps them to protect themselves from predators. Each group has a senior horse who helps all the others. They know each other well and always stick together.

During the warm season, the kiang boys usually live alone, but when the cold season comes, they get together. They love to run and swim and can walk very far in search of food.

How babies grow up

When it's time to become a mum, the kiang carry the foals in their bellies for almost a year. When a little kiang is born, it starts walking in just a few hours! That's really amazing, isn't it? And after a year, they can already live independently.

These are such interesting and amazing kiang animals!
