Family Phasianidae

Family Phasiananae

This subfamily includes pheasants, tragopans, jungle fowl, peafowl, and other similar birds living in southern zones of all continents and inhabiting diverse landscapes. Representatives of Phasianinae are mostly terrestrial birds, which are fast runners. Male pheasants spot splendid coloration of plumage and long adorning feathers, while the protective colour of females’ plumage is duller. Many species demonstrate complex courtship behaviours. Phasaininae are very prolific breeders; females of some species may lay up to 37 eggs. These birds nest on the ground. Eggs are incubated by the female alone.
