Suborder Nonruminantia or Suina

The ungulates of this suborder differ from the animals of other suborders by their foraging characteristics: they are omnivores without strict specialization. Representatives of the Nonruminantia suborder have massive bodies, short legs, and four toes on their feet, with quite developed outer toes (digits II and IV) that touch the ground when animals walk (Photo 1). The stomach is simple and consists of one, two or three compartments; molars are horny; the canines are large and grow during all animal lifespan. Their faces are featuring a small snout ending in a disc by cartilaginous tissue; these ungulates have a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, but do not have horns. This suborder includes 12 extant species.
