The common eland Taurotragus orys
Common eland видео
The common eland occurs in the arid open plains and savannah woodlands of Central Africa, from Ethiopia in the north to South Africa in the south of the range. It is the largest African antelope; its body length is 2 to 3 meters, shoulder height ranges from 160 to 180 cm and weight of adult males can reach one tone. The horns are twisted and grow up to 1 meter long in males; of course, females’ horns are shorter. This antelope has heavy and bulky body but, when threatened, it can reach speeds of 70 km per hour; besides, the eland is a good jumper. The elands usually live in groups of about 25 animals. Although these antelopes have been exterminated by humans for thousands years, stable populations continue to occur in many protected areas.
