The greater kudu Tragelaphus strepsiceros
The greater kudu is one of the largest antelopes; the males’ average weight is 250 kg, shoulder height, 1.5 meters and body length, 2.2 meters. Females weigh about 170 kg. The male’s head is crowned with large horns with two and a half twists and reach a length of one meter. Young greater kudus start growing horns at the age of 6 to 12 months; the first twist appears when the animals are 2 years old and the horns become fully grown by the age of 6 years. Besides, the males have large manes running along their throats, which are not present in the females. Greater kudus are found in southern and eastern Africa, where they inhabit dense bush thickets located close to water sources. These antelopes tend to avoid open plains.
