Moore's woolly lemur or Masoala woolly lemur (Avahi mooreorum)
Moore's woolly lemur (Avahi mooreororum), or the Masoala woolly lemur, is a woolly lemur endemic to Madagascar.
Avahi mooreororum is a species of primate mammal in the family Indriidae. Like all lemurs, it is endemic to Madagascar and is distributed in the northwest of the island, in the Masoala National Park.
It measures between 28 and 33 cm plus the tail, which reaches 29 to 37 cm, and weighs almost 1 kg. The back is chocolate brown, which lightens towards the base of the tail, which is cream-coloured. Like all members of the genus, it has a white spot on the inside of the hind legs. Ventrally it is greyish and the tail is reddish brown. The head is darker than the back and has a less marked facial mask than in other species; the eyebrows are not marked either, although there is a slight whitish patch under the jaws. The ears are not visible and blend in with the rest of the head.
Found in primary rainforests. Nocturnal and arboreal.
Its status on the IUCN Red List is "endangered species", due to its small range - less than 2550 km² - highly fragmented and in continuous decline. In addition, a decline in the number of adults has been noted.
