The Daraina sportive lemur (Lepilemur milanoii)
The Daraina sportive lemur (Lepilemur milanoii) is a sportive lemur endemic to Madagascar.
Appearance
Lepilemur milanoii is a species of primate mammal of the family Lepilemuridae. The back is reddish-brown and the base of the tail is greyish-yellow. The head is also reddish brown, the muzzle is greyish brown. The back of the head has a dark brown fuzzy stripe extending to the middle of the back. The inner surface of the thighs is reddish brown, otherwise the limbs are grey. The coat is long and dense. Its size is relatively small, measuring between 49 and 56 cm in total, with a tail length of 24 to 27 cm.
Distribution
Found in northern Madagascar and inhabits dry deciduous and evergreen forests. The range includes the Loki-Manambatu Reserve and the protected forests of Andrafiamen, where the species is sympatric with the related species Lepilemur ankaranensis.
Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has granted the species a conservation status of "endangered". The main threats to the population are hunting and deforestation.
