Penguin

Penguins are special birds that can't fly. But they are great swimmers! If you have seen a penguin in a picture or film, you will have noticed that it looks like it is wearing a funny black and white dress.

Where Penguins live

Most Penguins love the cold and live near the South Pole, in Antarctica. It's very, very cold there, but penguins don't get cold because they have a special coat of feathers that keeps them warm. Their short necks and strong bodies, short legs and webbing between their toes help penguins swim easily.

Penguins spend most of their time in the water. They love to swim, even in very cold water. Penguins can dive for long periods of time and swim very fast. Sometimes they jump out of the water like dolphins and then dive again.

On land, Penguins walk in small steps and stay very straight. But sometimes they jump or roll quickly on their tummy by pushing off with their legs.

What Penguins eat

Penguins love fish! They dive into icy waters and catch fish, shrimp, and other sea creatures. Their beak is designed to easily hold slippery fish. They catch food together with their friends.

How Penguins take care of babies

Penguins are caring parents. Mummy penguin lays an egg and daddy penguin can keep it warm on his paws while mummy looks for food. When the baby penguin hatches, it can already see and is covered in soft fluff. Baby Penguins love to bask with each other and play. Mummy and Daddy feed them fish and teach them how to be real penguins.

How many kinds of Penguins there are

There are lots of different kinds of penguins on our planet! Some of them are big and some of them are small. The biggest penguin can be almost as tall as a child, and the smallest penguin is no bigger than a toy car.

Penguins are fun companions

Have you ever seen penguins walk? They sway from side to side and it looks very funny! Penguins like to play with each other, slide on the ice on their tummy and swim in the water.
