Polar bear

The polar bear, also called the polar bear, is a very big and strong animal. The polar bears are bigger than all the bears and even bigger than all the predators in the world! Some polar bears can be over three metres long (almost like a car!) and weigh up to 800 kg (almost like a small elephant!). Female bears are usually a little smaller and lighter.

The bears fur is as white as snow and its claws are long and sharp. It has a large head and very wide paws, which help it not to fall through snow and swim in water. The bear also has a thick layer of fat that helps it keep warm.

Where polar bears live

The polar bears live in the very north of our planet, where it is always very cold. They like the Arctic, where there is a lot of ice and snow. The polar bears are excellent swimmers and can stay in the water for a long time, they can even hunt in the ocean.

What the polar bear eats

The polar bear is a predator. This means that it eats other animals. His favourite treat is seals. He uses his big claws and teeth to catch them. But if seals are not around, the bear may eat fish and birds.

Polar bear family

The polar bear usually lives alone, but when the time comes, they find a mate and together they take care of the baby bears. The cubs are born very small and are immediately covered with light coloured fluffy fur. The cubs cannot see or hear and their mum takes great care of them.

Baby bears are very slow to learn new things. They do not start to see and hear until they are one month old and their teeth grow for another month. When the cubs are three months old, they start to follow their mum outside their snow hole. Mama bear takes care of the cubs until they learn to forage for food on their own.

When the cubs are two years old, they grow up to be almost as big as their mum. At this point, the cubs and their mum are separated and the cubs start their own lives.
