Wolf

Wolves are wonderful animals that have always been very close to humans. Long ago, when people first started living on Earth, they looked up to wolves and learnt a lot from them. All the dogs that live at home with us are descended from wolves!

What a wolf looks like

Wolves are very intelligent and large animals that often live in forests, mountains and fields. They are very similar to dogs, but are usually bigger and stronger. Wolves are known for their thick fur, sharp fangs, and loud howls that can be heard from a great distance. Wolves look very proud and strong. They have long legs, large heads and long muzzles.

Wolves have two layers of fur. The top layer is the tough hair that repels water and dirt. The second layer is a soft undercoat that helps wolves stay warm even on cold winter days. Thanks to its coat, a wolf can sleep right on top of the snow and stay warm!

Wolf family

Wolves usually live together as a large family. There can be anywhere from 2 to 20 wolves in this family. It has a wolf dad, a wolf mum and lots of wolves of different ages. Sometimes the family includes wolves that are not related. They help raise the babies and protect the territory.

Each wolf family has its own territory where they live and look for food. Wolves mark their territory with special signs so that other wolves know it is their home. Each family has a leader who is called the alpha wolf. Wolves take great care of their children and learn, play, and hunt together.

What wolves eat

Wolves are carnivores. This means that they eat other animals. They hunt large animals like deer, elk, and bison, but they can also eat small animals like rabbits and squirrels. They are very good at hunting and usually work together to catch their prey.

Wolf babies

Baby wolf cubs are called pups. They are born blind and toothless but grow very quickly. Wolf cubs are very playful and curious, they love to play and learn how to become big wolves.

How wolves communicate

Wolves communicate with each other by howling. A wolf's howl can be heard very far away! With this howl, wolves tell each other where they are and what they are doing. Sometimes they use howling to tell the cubs that they have brought food. And the wolf cubs howl to let their parents know where they are.

Wolves really like to play with each other. It helps them get closer and be a friendly family. As they play, wolves touch each other, sniff each other, and lick each other's faces. It's their way of saying "Hi!" or "I love you!".
