Do you know who sings like that in the spring pond? It's a frog! A frog is a small green animal that likes to live near water.
The pool frog is the smallest green frog in Russia. It is small, smaller than your toy dinosaurs. The largest pool frogs can be as long as a pencil.
The pool frog has two large eyes on the top of its head that help it see around even when it is swimming. Her skin is usually green or brown so she can hide well among leaves and marsh. The frog also has very long hind legs that help it jump far and swim fast.
What a pool frog does
Frogs spend most of their time in or near water. They love to jump, swim, and catch insects with their quick tongue. Frogs can eat a variety of small animals such as insects, worms, and sometimes even fish!
How a little frog grows
Have you ever seen a baby frog? They start their life as small eggs that the mum frog lays in the water. From these eggs, frog tadpoles hatch. The tadpoles like to swim in the water and eat plants. After some time, they begin to change: their legs grow, their tail disappears, and they become adult frogs!
Frog Adventure Season
As soon as winter is gone and it gets warmer, pond frogs come out of their winter shelters. This usually happens in April or May. At first they are a little sluggish after their long winter hibernation, but after a couple of days they are active and ready for new adventures.
The frog is our friend
The pool frog is good for us and good for nature. They help to control the number of insects and their croaking makes spring evenings especially cosy. Take care of the frogs, they are our little green friends!
