A turkey is a big bird with a puffy tail. It has a long neck and a small head. If you have ever seen a turkey, you have probably noticed that it walks very important and proudly!

The turkeys we see in our yard or on the farm are slightly larger and heavier than the wild turkeys that live in the woods. Our domestic turkeys have shorter legs and are less wily. When it comes time for male turkeys to show off how beautiful they are, their breasts are puffier and their feathers are brightly coloured. You've probably heard people say, "Puffed up like a turkey"? That's what a turkey becomes at this point!

Where turkeys live

At first, these birds lived only in America. But then they were taken to other countries, because people really liked turkeys. Now they can be found all over the world!

What turkeys like to do

Turkeys don't fly, but they are great runners! They also like to roost and make different funny noises. If a turkey is happy, it may spread its big beautiful tail out in a fan like a peacock.

What turkeys eat

These birds are not particularly picky eaters. They like grains, berries, small insects, and even small animals. Turkeys also enjoy grazing on green meadows.

Secret turkey nests

Turkeys love to hide! Especially when they decide to have baby turkeys. They look for cosy, hidden places to make their nests. It could be a thick bush or a secluded spot in the woods.

What's interesting is that turkeys are pretty friendly birds. Sometimes several turkeys will lay their eggs in the same nest. It's like several mums settling into one big house for their future babies. When it's time to incubate the eggs and wait for the chicks to hatch, the turkeys do it together. They sit side by side, keeping their eggs warm.

And when the little chicks are born, the fun begins! The turkeys take their chicks all together as if they had a big, fun turkey "kindergarten". The chicks play, learn to find food, and always feel safe because they have lots of "mums".
