The bronze-tailed peacock-pheasant is endemic to Indonesia, inhabiting mountain forests of west Sumatra at elevations of 420 to 1,200 m above sea level. It is a small dark brown pheasant with dark grey spots on the neck, dark grey legs, rather small head, and long, narrow tail of sixteen feathers. The male measures up to 56 cm in length, including the length of the tail, which comprises 18–22 cm. The upper part of the body is chestnut brown with black streaks, the rectrices are chestnut fulvous barred with black, the tail feathers are chestnut brown with metallic purplish bars near tips. The underparts of the body are dark brown with blackish streakes. The bill is blackish-grey, straight and thin, with the maxilla curved on the tip. Both sexes are quite similar. The male has longer tail and two spurs on the legs, while the female is dark brown and does not have spurs. The bronze-tailed peacock-pheasant is only member of the genus in which both sexes have no ocelli. Bronze-tailed peacock-pheasants establish permanent pair bonds. Unusually for Galliformes, pair mates of this species move around together not only on the ground, but also in the air. Like other members of the genus, these elusive birds are shy and wary.
