The Eld’s deer (Cervus eldi)
The Eld’s deer, also known as the brow-antlered deer, is a beautiful animal despite its rough and coarse, dark brown fur. Adult males stand at 114 cm tall and weigh up to 113 kilograms. They have quite distinctive antlers that grow outwards and then inwards with smaller branches growing from the top, and look lyre-shaped sidewise. Males shed their antlers in August and grow the new ones as soon as in December but the breeding season does not start until March or April. The males usually stay alone except during mating season. The Eld’s deer prefer hilly terrain with light forests and are never seen at high elevations or in dense forests. These animals migrate in small groups seeking shelters in midday and coming out to the clearings at dusk and down. The Eld’s deer are found in savannahs and marshes in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hainan.
