The silvery marmoset (Mico argentatus o Callithrix argentata) is a New World monkey that lives in the eastern Amazon Rainforest in Brazil.

Appearance and peculiarities

<с>Mico argentatus is a species of platyrrhine primate. Mico argentatus differs markedly from other toy species. Its face and ears are naked, pink or even dark red. Its body fur, like that of the other species, is long, soft and silky, but of a uniform, almost white colour, and its tail is completely black. The voice of these monkeys is high-pitched, shrill and often bird-like. Interestingly, their cubs are almost black and only gradually acquire the colour of adults. They are close to squirrels in size: their body length is about 20 cm, the length of the tail is about 30 cm, the weight of adult males is 350-365 g.

Mico argentatus are arboreal animals with diurnal activity. Their long, curved claws allow them to easily climb trees in search of food and escape from predators.

Habitat and nutrition

Mico argentatus inhabits eastern Bolivia and western and northeastern Brazil in tropical and subtropical forests, and can also be found in the south and east of the Amazon basin in eastern Brazil. They remain in large flocks in the treetops, but not in the foliage, but on large branches. The diet of Mico argentatus consists mainly of tree sap, insects, gums, fruits, flowers and leaves. Occasionally, they may catch and eat a small vertebrate.
