Appearance

The northern rufous mouse lemur (Microcebus tavaratra), northern brown mouse lemur, or Tavaratra mouse lemur is a species of primate (mouse lemurs).

The fur is long, thick, and the colour of the upper body can be earthy, ochre, yellowish, while the belly is light beige. The band of hair on the back is brown. Reddish crest and ears, wool around the eyes pale orange, black markings nearer the ears. Light grey coat on the extremities, dark grey vibrissae.

Distribution

Found in northern Madagascar, in the regions of Ankanara, Anadamerana, Andavakuera and Andramiamena. Probably also inhabits forest areas in the north, including, for example, the forests of the Montagne d'Frances. It occurs at altitudes between 20 and 250 m. The area of the range is estimated at about 5,600 km2.

Conservation status

In 2014, the International Union for Conservation of Nature granted this species a "vulnerable" conservation status, improving the conservation status from the "endangered" status granted in 2008. The average population density is estimated at 100 individuals per km2, varying from 20 to 200 individuals per km2. The population is slowly declining due to habitat destruction for the mining and logging industries.
